Assessment: My Belief Systems
Think about some of your early experiences around relationships. Consider the belief system(s) that might have arisen from the situations. Use the examples below as a guide to come up with scenarios that reflect your story and note them in your Journal.
EXAMPLE
Experience: My father used to drink too much alcohol and be verbally abusive to my mother.
Possible Belief(s): Intimate relationships are scary. Women are treated poorly in relationships.
EXAMPLE
Experience: I had a sibling who had issues and needed a lot of attention. I was often left alone to take care of myself.
Possible Belief(s): I am on my own. Independence is important for my survival.
EXAMPLE
Experience: My older brother chased me around the house with a bat and my mother thought it was funny.
Possible Belief(s): I can’t trust people close to me. I am the only one who can really keep me safe.
